Authorities in Bulgaria and Greece announced Tuesday they have busted a baby trafficking ring. Fourteen people were arrested for organizing the illegal adoptions of at least 14 newborn babies. Police say pregnant Bulgarian women who agreed to sell their babies were taken to Greece to give birth. There, the babies were mostly sold to Greek couples with no children of their own.
Police were tipped off to the trafficking operation by a woman who refused to give up her baby girl after giving birth. The child was taken by force.
According to authorities, the price of the children was determined by “their gender and skin color.” A boy could be sold for around $34,000 while a girl could go for $27,000. The mothers of the child were paid around $2,000.
Nine people were arrested in the Greek city of Lamia while five others were arrested in the cities of Varna, Burgas and Yambol in Bulgaria.
