Florence Welch developed loud voice for attention

Florence Welch's wild performances are inspired by the indifferent crowds she faced in her early career.

The Florence and the Machine front woman - known for her eccentric fashion sense, loud voice and climbing her sets while performing - believes playing in small, packed venues meant she had to sing in a boisterous manner so she could be heard.

She said: "I was always pretty loud. I think that was part of it- where the style of singing came from, having to get people's attention."

"Everyone's talking and drinking and you kind of really have to command the room. I kind of learned actually how to control it more and now what's lucky is people are already listening and I don't have to shout to get their attention."

The 24-year-old beauty also confesses she is "so excited" to have been nominated for Best New Artist - which includes competition from Justin Bieber, Drake, Mumford and Sons and Esperanza Spalding - at the forthcoming Grammy Awards.

She said: "I am just really happy to be nominated and to go out there and see what happens. I'm so excited!"
