Thursday Night NFL Scores: NY Jets Edge New England Patriots in OT for AFC East Lead

Brett Favre was 26/33 passing for 258 yards and two touchdowns, Thomas Jones rushed for 104 yards and a TD and Leon Washington collected 177 yards on kickoff returns including a 92-yard return for a touchdown as the New York Jets (7-3) knocked off the New England Patriots (6-4) 34-31 in overtime to take sole possession of first-place in the AFC East.

Favre opened the scoring for the Jets with a 7-yard toss to Washington in the first quarter and after Stephen Gostkowski booted a 42-yard field goal to get the Patriots on the board Jay Feely answered with a 31-yard field goal to put NY in front 10-3 heading into the second quarter.

Gostkowski then brought the Patriots to within 10-6 with a second field goal but Washington took the ensuing kickoff 92-yards for a touchdown and the Jets were up 17-6. After the Jets defense stopped the Pats on their next possession Favre marches his squad down and hit Jerricho Cotchery on a 15-yard touchdown and it was 24-6.

Just before the end of the first half Matt Cassel, who finished with 400 yards passing and three touchdowns, finally got the Patriots in the endzone after hitting Jabar Gaffney on a 19-yard pass with 15 seconds left before halftime.

Cassel then brought the Patriots to within 24-21 at the end of the third quarter when he found Benjamin Watson on a 10-yard touchdown pass and early in the fourth quarter Gostkowski completed the comeback with a 47-yard field goal.

The Jets managed to grab the lead back with just over three minutes left in the game when Thomas Jones scored on a one-yard run but Cassel once again drove the Patriots down the field and with no time on the clock hit Randy Moss on a 16-yard touchdown pass to force overtime.

New York won the toss and that was all Favre needed as he led the Jets on the winning drive, converting on big third down plays until Feely lined up for the 34-yard field goal.
