Russian MPs Backing Presidential Term Reform

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev’s recent introduction of a measure that would extend the presidential term from four years to six has received initial backing from members of parliament.

There is speculation that the constitutional change could open the door for former President Vladimir Putin to step back into office, a position he held for two terms before recently being named prime minister under Medvedev’s presidency.

The assumption is that Putin would return to office after Medvedev served his initial four-year term and according to the amended constitution would be able to serve two six-year terms.

Putin’s return to the presidency could come much quicker according to some though as Medvedev’s fast-tracking of the bill leaves many believing the former president could be Russian president soon.

A final vote of the bill would more than likely be made in December.
