Montecito Fire Nears Santa Barbara, California Destroying at Least 100 Homes

The inferno that has consumed more than 100 homes in the town of Montecito, California continues to rage as firefighters work to contain the blaze.

More than 5,000 homes have been evacuated in the community that has been a hideaway for celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Nicole Kidman.

Westmont College has also felt the damage of the Montecito Fire as buildings on the 1,000-student campus were destroyed as students were forced to evacuate.

Strong winds have continued to fan the flames leaving many in the 14,000 resident community little hope that their homes will be standing when they return. The winds, known as “sundowners,” kicked up the flames over night and left firefighters with an unpredictable blaze that has shifted direction on numerous occasions.
