Gay Rights Activist David Kato Found Dead

David Kato, a prominent gay rights activist in Uganda whose name was published in an anti-gay newspaper article, has died. Kato’s body was discovered near his home in Mukono, Kampala on Wednesday. Kato’s lawyer, John Onyango, said he had been bludgeoned to death and robbed of money and clothing.

Last year Kato told CNN he feared for his life after the tabloid Rolling Stone published his name, address and photo in a list of homosexuals. “Hang Them” was printed at the top of the list. The publication is not associated in any way with America’s Rolling Stone magazine.

It is unclear if the story or if Kato’s work as a gay rights activist is connected to his death. Authorities are investigating and have issued arrest warrants for two suspects.
