Michael Fassbender joins Ridley Scott's Prometheus

Michael Fassbender is to star in 'Prometheus'.

The 'Inglourious Basterds' actor has agreed to appear as an android opposite Noomi Rapace in the Ridley Scott-directed project, which was originally proposed as a prequel to the 'Alien' series of movies.

Confirmation of Michael's casting comes after negotiations and means the actor will not feature in 'Show White and the Huntsman', which he was previously in talks for.

Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron have also been linked with roles in the movie.

Details of the storyline have been shrouded in secrecy but the director has promised the project will have "'Alien' DNA."

However, speaking about the project when it was still planned as an 'Alien' prequel, Ridley - who was behind the first instalment of the 1979 sci-fi horror movie starring Sigourney Weaver - revealed it would be a "tough" watch.

He said: "The film will be really tough, really nasty. It's the dark side of the moon.

"We are talking about Gods and engineers. Engineers of space. And were the aliens designed as a form of biological warfare? Or biology that would go in and clean up a planet."

'Prometheus' is scheduled for release in June 2012, having been put back from its original March 2012 date.
