Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe Forming New Government, MDC Continues to Oppose Move

At the urging of his own ZANU-PF party Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has begun the process of forming a new government despite an unresolved dispute with main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change over the appointment of the Home Affairs cabinet position.

Mugabe and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai have failed to come to an understanding on how to resolve the current problem. The two sides had agreed to a power-sharing deal after a contested presidential election but that agreement has never fully been implemented as the MDC continues to accuse Mugabe of failing to meet his end.

Tsvangirai, who was to become prime minister according to the agreement, has said his party would not share the Home Affairs post, declaring Mugabe had already taken a number of important minister appointments and Home Affairs would not be another.

According to Tsvangirai the idea that Mugabe would control Zimbabwe’s military as well as its state security is unacceptable.

As part of the power-sharing agreement Mugabe would have authority to appoint 15 cabinet positions while Tsvangirai would have 13 and a small MDC faction led by Arthur Mutambara would have 3 appointments.

Mugabe angered both Tsvangirai and Mutambara when he began to fill cabinet positions that would allow him to control the direction of the country.
