In an effort to halt the violence sparked by rebel militias Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to join forces in securing their common border and eliminating the presence of Hutu fighters that have taken up residence in eastern DR Congo.
The agreement comes as the Congo finds itself dealing with a rebellion led by general Laurent Nkunda who has said he is fighting only to protect his minority Tutsi community. Nkuda has accused the Congolese government of failing to stop Rwandan FDLR Hutu forces from entering Congo and carrying out attacks against Tutsis.
Congo has, on a number of occasions, promised to curb the flow of Hutus into the country and disarm militias but they have often failed to follow through.
As a result Nkunda has led his troops into several conflicts and demanded direct talks with the government before the battles end.
