Sylmar Fires in Northern Foothills of Los Angeles Leads to Massive Evacuations

A devastating wildfire broke out in the small community of Sylmar in Los Angeles’ northern foothills on Friday night and has continued to char acres of land and destroy homes and buildings standing in its unpredictable path through early Saturday.

With wind gusts of 76 mph more than 2,600 acres have already been left in ashes while an untold number of homes lay in ruin.

Firefighters have had to abandon efforts to battle a blaze that quickly consumed a Sylmar mobile home park, an area that was mapped for 600 homes. It hasn’t been just mobile homes that have been gutted as a number of subdivisions have seen homes turned to kindling.

Massive evacuations for Sylmar as well as Knollwood and Porter Ranch have been ordered as the blaze continues to move uncontrolled. Included in the evacuations were several patients in critical care at the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center as electricity was knocked out and staff were forced to use hand powered ventilators to keep patients alive.

The Sylmar firs come as firefighters continue to battle the blazes in Montecito near Santa Barbara that have left more than 100 homes destroyed. The Montecito fires also damaged several buildings on the Westmont College campus and forced students to take refuge in the school’s gym.
