With just 1:40 remaining in the game the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-4) had a 27-7 lead and looked like they had their revenge from a stunning loss just one year ago but the Navy Midshipmen (6-4) mounted a crazy comeback that saw them get to within 27-21 before the luck of the Irish won out.
Notre Dame used their defense to put their first points of the game on the board as Toryan Smith collected a blocked punt and returned it 14-yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Navy answered in the second quarter as Cory Finnerty scored on a 22-yard run but the Irish managed to grab the lead as the half ended when Brandon Walker kicked a 28-yard field goal.
The Irish looked like a different team in the third quarter as they went with a running attack that produced two touchdowns, an 11-yard TD from Armando Allen Jr. and a 7-yard run from Robert Hughes and Notre Dame carried a 24-7 lead into the fourth.
Walker then tacked on a 36-yard field goal early in the final frame and it looked like the Irish were rolling but the Midshipmen nearly mounted a comeback for the ages. With 1:39 left on the clock Shun White scored on a 22-yard run. Navy then recovered an onside kick and two plays later Ricky Dobbs had Navy within 27-21.
Navy then recovered a second onside kick and drove on the Irish, getting down to the ND 31-yard-line before their drive ended on an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Notre Dame will face Syracuse next week while Navy faces Northern Illinois on Nov. 25.
