Afghani President Offers Taliban Leader Security Deal for Peace Talks

In a move that has upset the United States and several Western countries Afghani President Hamid Karzai has offered to provide Taliban leader Mullah Omar security if he agrees to meet for peace talks.

Mullah has been in hiding since the Taliban was ousted from power in 2001 and remains the target of a multimillion dollar bounty offered by the United States.

Karzai addressed the security deal at a news conference in Kabul stating, “If I hear from him that he is willing to come to Afghanistan or to negotiate for peace... I, as the president of Afghanistan, will go to any length to provide him [with] protection.

"If I say I want protection for Mullah Omar, then the international community has two choices: remove me, or leave if they disagree. And both are good.

"If I am removed in the cause of peace for Afghanistan by force by them, then I'll be very happy. But if they disagree they can leave. But we are not in that stage yet."

Karzai has been facing growing pressure within his country with the recent rise in violence.
