Rebel Leader Laurent Nkunda Agrees to Support Peace Process in DR Congo

Rebel leader Laurent Nkunda has said his Tutsi militia would respect a ceasefire with the Democratic Republic of Congo government, signaling hope for a country that has seen a surge of violence that has displaced hundreds of thousands of citizens.

Nkunda made the announcement following a meeting with UN envoy Olusegun Obasanjo who has tried to broker a deal to end the devastating clashes.

The rebel leader has said his minority Tutsi community has only taken up arms as a means of defending themselves from Rwandan FDLR Hutu rebels. Nkunda has accused the Congolese government of supporting the Hutus and has said the violence would continue until the government agreed to direct talks.

Last week Rwanda and Congo agreed to work towards eradicating the presence of Rwandan FDLR Hutu rebels from eastern Congo. The Hutus fled to Congo following the end of 1994 genocide in Rwanda that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus dead.
