Firefighters Continue to Battle Wildfires in California, States of Emergency Declared

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared states of emergency in Orange, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara counties as wildfires continue to char thousands of acres as firefighters work round the clock to contain the blazes.

The Sylmar fires, in northern Los Angeles, remain the largest as more than 10,000 people have been evacuated while the fast-moving flames continue to indiscriminately consume million dollar homes and mobile home parks alike.

Aided by strong wind gusts that have reached 80 mph the Sylmar fires have left more than 8,000 acres in ruin and destroyed more than 500 homes since breaking out on Friday. Fire officials have said they have about 20 percent containment on the blaze with about 2,000 firefighters working to halt the infernos progress.

In Orange County another 12,000 people have been evacuated with more than 2,000 acres lost and another 100 homes destroyed.

The fires in Santa Barbara that began on Thursday are now about 40 percent contained as nearly 200 homes in Santa Barbara and Montecito have fallen victim.
