Nazril Ilham, a popular pop singer in Indonesia that goes by the name Ariel and fronts the band Peterpan, has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison for appearing in two sex tapes that surfaced last year. Ilham’s conviction comes nearly 3 years after Indonesia passed an anti-pornography law, which bans anyone from producing, copying, distributing or broadcasting pornography. Offenders can receive up to 12 years in prison. Prosecutors requested Ilham be sentenced to 5 years.
The first of Iham’s tapes featured him and TV journalist Luna Maya, while the second featured him with journalist and soap star Cut Tari. Both videos went viral on social networking sites last year. Reza Rinaldi, an employee of Peterpan’s music label, was convicted Monday of uploading the footage online. Rinaldi was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
During Ilham’s sentencing Monday in a West Java Court, Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso said the singer “is legitimately and convincingly guilty of giving chances for others to spread, make and provide pornography.” Ilham also received a $27,692 fine.
Ilham’s lawyer says he will appeal.
