SuperCamp President and Co-Founder, Bobbi Deporter, was featured on San Diego 6 in a segment with actor Richard Dreyfuss to speak on the current state of the education system in America.
“We’re failing our kids,” Ms. Deporter said. “Far too many of them are disengaged, they’re failing classes and some of them are dropping out of school. There have been so many huge studies on what makes a difference for kids, and [the answer is] effective teaching.”
Ms. Deporter offered two main ideas to teachers who are looking to reach their students more effectively: connect the content to what they are already interested in and acknowledge any amount of effort the students put forth.
Mr. Dreyfuss has been a social and educational activist for some time, supporting causes that place importance on the civic duty of future generations.
“What we really must do is create a civic body that has a mobile, agile mind and hand that to the business community,” Mr. Dreyfuss reiterated in the television interview.
His ideas fall directly in line with SuperCamp’s primary teaching in the areas of problem solving, reading comprehension and critical thinking. All three are areas that are crucial to the development of society, but are also areas where the current education system is lacking.
When school budgets are cut, there is typically little value placed on problem solving, reading comprehension and critical thinking exercises in favor of subjects like social studies and foreign language. Because of this, the United States ranks 28 out of 34 developed countries in problem solving.
With 98% of SuperCamp graduates continuing to use the skills they learned while at the academic summer camp, SuperCamp is guaranteed to give teens and pre-teens the leg-up they need.
