Congo Ceasefire Ends as Rebels Continue Offensive

Minority Tutsi rebels under the command of gen. Laurent Nkunda have broken a ceasefire agreed to on Sunday and continued their offensive push in eastern Congo.

Nkunda met with UN envoy Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday and declared his rebels would abide by a ceasefire but less than 24 hours after the announcement violence once again erupted near the town of Rwindi, just north of Goma and some reports have indicated they now control the town.

The rebels have been fighting government troops as well as militias supported by the Congolese government. Nkunda has defended the offensive saying his rebels were only trying to protect the minority Tutsi community from Rwandan FDLR Hutu rebels who have been in the region since the end of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.

Nkunda has said the fighting would continue until the government, led by President Joseph Kabila, engaged in direct negotiations. Kabila has refused to meet Nkunda for those talks.
