Zimbabwe police have halted a planned march by medical professionals who have been protesting conditions in the country’s hospitals.
At issue for the medical personnel are equipment shortages, pay and hospital shutdowns.
In Harare police sealed exits at the main hospital to prevent staff from marching into the city center and warned staff they risked arrest if they participated in the protests.
Zimbabwe has been hit hard by outbreaks of disease as conditions continue to deteriorate. A recent cholera outbreak in Matabeleland South has killed 36 and left more than 400 infected. Much of that has been due to unsanitary water as pipes have burst and the presence of raw sewage is common.
While the opposition party, led by Morgan Tsvangirai, blamed President Robert Mugabe for the conditions the ruling party has pointed at sanctions by the international community for the situation.
