Tributes for Margaret John continue

Tributes have continued to pour in for 'Gavin and Stacey' star Margaret John who died today (02.02.11).

Rob Brydon - who starred as Uncle Bryn in the sitcom alongside Margaret who played flirtatious pensioner Doris - described the actress, who passed away this morning, as a "wonderful person".

He wrote on twitter: "Just heard the terribly sad news that Margaret John has passed away. What a wonderful person she was, everyone on G&S adored her. (sic)"

Former 'Hi-Di-Hi' star Ruth Madoc - who was friends with Margaret - said: "It's very sad news. Margaret John was a great Welsh icon - and an era has passed away with her.

"She had a wonderful sense of humour. We were part of the 'Taffia' in London in the 60s - and I always looked up to her."

Margaret's agent Gemma McAvoy revealed the star, who was 84, had died in a hospital in Swansea, Wales, after suffering from a short illness.

She added: "She used to say how she started playing lots of tragic roles and it was only later people recognised her great sense of humour.

"She had the most infectious love of life and an incredible sense of humour, and that is why people felt so warmly towards her.

"She felt like a friend to us all and not just a colleague and she will be sadly missed."

Margaret only married once at the age of 48, but her husband died three years later. They had no children.

Her TV and film career spanned over 50 years and included roles in classic 60s series 'Z-Cars', cult sci-fi show 'Blake's 7' and 'Little Britain'.

She also holds the record for the longest time gap between two appearances in 'Doctor Who' - taking on a role first in 1968 and then again in the relaunched series in 2006.
