Saudi Oil Tanker Seized by Pirates, Anchors Off Somali Coast

The Saudi oil tanker, Sirius Star, hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean has reportedly anchored off the coast of Somalia with a cargo of 2 million barrels of oil and 25 crew members held hostage.

Saturday’s seizure of the Sirius Star off the coast of Kenya represented the largest hijacking of a vessel ever and showed an increased willingness by pirates to target any ship that passes within striking distance.

Saudi Arabia has condemned the act and urged the international community to step up its actions to prevent the growing problems of piracy.

Vela International, owner of the tanker, has been working to secure the release of the crew members and the vessel but there has been no word regarding the demands of the pirates.
