UN’s International Court of Justice to Hear Croatia’s Genocide Case Against Serbia

The United Nations’ International Court of Justice has decide by a 107 vote that they had jurisdiction to hear Croatia’s case against Serbia alleging acts of genocide during conflicts that dominated the early 1990s.

The decision represents just the second time the International Court of Justice has agreed to hear a case tied to genocide, the first was brought by Bosnia and targeted Serbia as well.

According to Croatia more than 20,000 Croatians died in the conflict and in a complaint filed in 1999 they accused Serbia of “a form of genocide which resulted in large numbers of Croatian citizens being displaced, killed, tortured, or illegally detained as well as extensive property destruction.”

Serbia has claimed the International Court of Justice did not have jurisdiction to hear the case and argued that the alleged crimes occurred before the new republic had been formed.

There has been no date set for the hearing.

Serbia was cleared of genocide in the initial case brought by Bosnia.
