Illegal immigrant dies in ICE custody

By : Tanya Gonzalez

An illegal alien has recently died while still in federal custody.

A Honduran citizen who was being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) just died of a heart attack he sustained while at a jail in Orange County.

According to ICE representatives, the victim was 55-year-old Jose Aguilar-Espinoza. He died on Monday following the heart attack at the University of California Irvine Medical Center’s emergency room.

Aguilar-Espinoza was arrested on January 12 after having been discovered to be illegally residing in the country. He was being detained at Theo Lacy Jail in Orange County, awaiting deportation proceedings.

An autopsy has been scheduled to be performed on Aguilar-Espinoza’s body. ICE officials have notified Aguilar-Espinoza’s family as well as the Honduran consulate.

This marks the fifth death of an immigrant detainee in the custody of ICE officials since last October.

Immigrants who are living in the United States without an appropriate green card, employment visa, or other form of approved documentation are doing so illegally and are subject to be arrested and deported. While it can sometimes be difficult to figure out all the necessary processes of applying for legal status, help is available. If you or someone you know want to remain in the U.S., seek the help of an immigration lawyer to assist you.

Without an immigration attorney, not only will immigrants have a hard time in getting everything they need done, but they will also have a much lower chance of being granted legal status. From speaking to immigration officials to filling out important documents, immigration lawyers do whatever it takes to ensure that their clients can stay in the United States legally.
