A mesothelioma patient died while in the midst of a asbestos lawsuit.
Helen Wickings, of Wallington, was 65 when she died. She was suing the Inland Revenue tax offices in Croydon and Epsom after beliving that she was exposed to asbestos while working there.
Wickings contend that she contracted mesothelioma after breathing in asbestos fibers found in the archive room at the Croydon location and fibers in the exposed pipes of the boiler room at the Epsom location. Her occupation required her to fill archives at Croydon and read meters at Epsom, so she was exposed to asbestos on a daily basis.
Asbestos is relatively stable and non-threatening when it is intact. It is when the fibers become loose and airborne that they pose a threat to those who breath them in. Asbestos exposure is known to lead to Wickings’ disease, mesothelioma, among other health concerns.
Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, chest and abdomen. It can take up to 50 years from initial asbestos exposure to develop, making it extremely difficult to treat and diagnose, as well as difficult to find the source of the exposure.
Furthermore, symptoms may not even be drastic enough for the victim to seek help. Wickings herself said the cancer “started as a bad cough.”
Unfortunately, the cough became something greater. Her health began to deteriorate and toward the end of her life, she had difficulty walking.
When she died, Wickings’ case had been postponed while evidence was being gathered. If the case continues and wins, her husband will most likely be entitled to the compensation.
