Speaking in a video message to a meeting of state governors U.S. President-elect Barack Obama vowed to help “lead the world toward a new era of global co-operation on climate change” on Tuesday, one month ahead of a UN summit aimed at crafting a climate treaty ahead of the Kyoto Protocol expiration in 2012.
While Obama won’t be at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change summit held in Poland he did say that when he takes office in January his administration would be at the forefront of climate initiatives.
The video message from Obama was aired at the Governors’ Global Climate Summit in California.
Obama has pledged to lower greenhouse gas emissions, implement renewable energy solutions and establish a “Global Energy Forum of the world’s largest emitters.”
President George Bush withdrew the United States from the Kyoto Protocol in 2001 but Obama has made it known he would look to forge a lasting relationship with UN initiatives.
