Lulu Guinness had Madonna success

Lulu Guinness knew she was a success after Madonna bought one of bags.

The British handbag designer - whose creations are also popular with the likes of Keira Knightley and Helena Bonham Carter - launched her eponymous label in 1989 without having any formal design training and knew she had made it when the 'Material Girl' singer purchased her Rose Basket bag.

She said: "My lucky break came when I designed my Rose Basket bag, which was picked up on straight away by the press and became an instant hit.

"I remember Madonna walked into my first boutique on the Ledbury Road and she bought a Rose basket, this was when it really hit home that the label was a success."

As well as her successful handbag range, this year Lulu will release a luggage line, which she says is a "natural progression" for her.

She told vogue.com: "My luggage line is a collection of chic, feminine suitcases. I especially designed them for women who travel a lot with work, I feel there is a lack of stylish, inexpensive suitcases for women. I felt luggage was a natural progression for me. I have had a long standing relationship with Pelham who we are partnering with on the luggage, which they are producing to a very high standard. I am delighted to be working with Pelham on the first Lulu Guinness travel collection."

The luggage line will be launched in July.
