David Walliams lands Doctor Who role

David Walliams is to star in the new series of 'Doctor Who'.

The comic actor has revealed he will play an extraterrestrial being when the BBC sci-fi show returns to TV screens this year.

During an interview on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Chris Evans, he said: "I've actually been offered a part in 'Doctor Who', which I'm very, very excited about. I've said yes. I don't think I can say much, but I'll say I'm an alien."

He did not reveal whether his intergalactic character would be a friend or foe to the time-travelling Doctor - played by Matt Smith - but did reveal he would be filming his scenes "soon".

David, 39, also admitted he would love to portray the titular Time Lord, but he isn't expecting a phone call if Matt decides it's time for his eleventh incarnation to regenerate.

He added: "I don't think any actor would turn that down. I won't be cast now though because they're getting younger."

When Matt took over the role from Tenth Doctor David Tennant at the age of 26 he was the youngest actor to step inside the TARDIS, beating the previous holder of the record, Fifth Doctor Peter Davison, by three years.
