Gunmen Kill Nuevo Laredo Police Chief

Mexican officials have confirmed the Nuevo Laredo Police Chief Manuel Farfan Carreola was killed by gunmen Wednesday night near his office. Two men in Carreola’s security team were also killed while two others were injured. Authorities have released few details on the shooting.

Carreola, a retired army officer, had only served as police chief for just over 1 month. He began receiving telephone threats soon after he took office.

Nuevo Laredo is located in the state of Tamaulipas and sits across the border from Laredo, Texas. The city is at the center of turf wars between multiple drug cartels, including the Gulf cartel, the Los Zatas and Sinloa cartel.
