Barack Obama Adds Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle to Cabinet

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has accepted the position of Secretary of Health and Human Services as President-elect Barack Obama continues to shape his Cabinet.

Daschle has been a close advisor to Obama and campaigned for him during the 2008 presidential elections.

From 1994 to 2004 Daschle was the leading voice of Democrats in the Senate. The former South Dakota senator served as both minority leader and majority leader as Democrats gained control of the Senate. He lost his re-election bid in 2004.

Like Obama, Daschle supports a government-funded insurance program for the uninsured and that would likely be a key element in his shaping of health care policy.
