Amnesty International Appeals to Sri Lanka Government to Allow Aid to Flow

As Sri Lanka’s government forces continue to clash with Tamil Tiger rebels the number of people displaced in the northern Wanni region has reached hundreds of thousands and Amnesty International is now appealing to both government and rebels to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need.

Amnesty International has said those displaced are in desperate need of food and shelter as well as safe water. The international organization has warned that the situation could be catastrophic if something isn’t done soon as Sri Lanka faces the looming monsoon season.

The Tamil Tigers hold a strong presence in the northern area and the government Amnesty has said the government is not capable of delivering aid to those in need. Amnesty has asked that the two sides allow monitors into the area to assess the needs and ensure the aid reached the displaced.

Neither the government nor the rebels have responded to Amnesty’s appeal.
