David Essex triggers EastEnders female frenzy

David Essex's arrival on the 'EastEnders' set has caused havoc among the soap's female cast members.

The 63-year-old singer is to set foot in Albert Square later this year as Alfie Moon's (Shane Richie) mischievous uncle Eddie, and the female stars of the BBC One show are already fighting over whose alter-ago will become the veteran pop star's lover.

Cheryl Fergison - who plays Heather Trott - told Inside Soap magazine: "Linda Henry (Shirley Carter) and others have put in their bids but I think bosses should give him to Heather."

David recently admitted he was "really excited" about the prospect of joining the cast and playing cheeky chappie Eddie.

He said: "Being an East Ender myself, I'm really excited to be joining the Square. Eddie Moon is a great character.

"I can't wait to get to grips with the role and work with such a fantastic cast. I'm really pleased that I've been able to make filming work around my tour dates this time."

Bryan Kirkwood, executive producer of the soap, added: "He is a unique talent with a legion of fans and he will bring warmth and charisma.

"His arrival brings a new generation of the Moon family to Walford."
