Exclusive WebTV Performance by Grammy Award Winning Guitarist Tom Morello on maniaTV
This week on maniaTV’s live performance show, Wrigley’s Stage 5, Grammy Award-winning guitarist Tom Morello gives an exclusive live performance as his folk alter-ego, The Nighwatchman. Morello, who is best known for his tenure with the bands Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave, and was deemed the 26th “Best Guitarist of All Time” by Rolling Stone Magazine, performs three songs off his newest album, The Fabled City, including “Midnight in the City of Destruction”, “The Fabled City”, and “The King of Hell”. Morello created the identity of The Nightwatchman, an "artist of the people," when a desire to return to political activism in his music struck him in 2003, after over a year of playing non-activist rock in Audioslave. He began playing political acoustic folk music in a Los Angeles coffeehouse before a small crowd, and soon after went on Billy Bragg's Tell Us the Truth tour. In February 2007, he announced a solo album, One Man Revolution, which was released on April 24, 2007 in the US and May 7th worldwide.
Morello describes The Nightwatchman as "the black Robin Hood of 21st century music" and "a reaction against illicit wars, first strikes, torture, secret prisons, and spying illegally on American citizens. A reaction against war crimes, and a reaction against a few corporations that grow rich [off] this illicit war while people beg for food in the city streets." He has compared The Nightwatchman to Woody Guthrie, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. His newest album, “The Fabled City”, was released on September 30th , 2008 by Epic Records.
