The ongoing problems in Zimbabwe have led to the South African government declaring it would withhold $28 million of agricultural aid to the troubled country, demanding stable government be in place before that aid is released.
Zimbabwe has been mired in what has been called a humanitarian crisis as a power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai of the Movement for Democratic Change party continues to leave the country unstable.
It was former South African President Thabo Mbeki who brokered a deal between the two sides in September but that deal has been hung up on the issue of cabinet appointments. Mugabe has insisted on appointing officials to key cabinet posts while leaving lesser ministerial positions to Tsvangirai and MDC-faction leader Arthur Mutambara.
With the instability South Africa has now decided it would refrain from handing over money to the country, this at a time when a large portion of the Zimbabwe population is in need of food and outbreaks of disease become more frequent. Nearly 300 people have already died from cholera ad those numbers will likely rise as health services continue to collapse in the country.
On top of the health crisis and food shortages Zimbabwe’s economy is in shambles as inflation continues to skyrocket.
