The #2 Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-0, 6-0) will face arguably their biggest obstacle to a berth in the BCS national championship game when they travel to Norman to take on the #5 Oklahoma Sooners (9-1, 5-1) on Saturday in a huge Big 12 South showdown that could determine who takes the conference crown.
Saturday’s matchup will feature the nation’s most prolific offenses as the Sooners rank #1 after putting 51.4 points on the board per game while the Red Raiders rank #3 with 47.9 points per game.
Both offenses are led by stellar quarterbacks with Oklahoma’s sophomore Sam Bradford averaging 340.6 yards per game, good enough for #3 in the nation, while leading the country with 38 TD passes.
As impressive as Bradford has been Graham Harrell has been on another planet for the Red Raiders.
Harrell leads the country with an average of 407.7 passing yards per game, has thrown 36 TDs on the year while tossing just five interceptions in 463 passing attempts.
Harrell has had a lot of help from Michael Crabtree, the sophomore receiver has averaged 101 yards per game while leading the country with 18 touchdown receptions. For Bradford, much of his help has come from a solid running attack led by DeMarco Murray who averages just over 80 yards a game on 14 carries, making defenses respect the run and opening up passing lanes.
Defensively, both teams are in the middle of the pack averaging about 22-23 points per game but their secondary has been blistered this year, each team ranked in the 90’s as the Sooners sallow 238.1 passing yards a game and the Red Raiders 244 yards per game. It’s a different story when it comes to the run as both teams feature a strong line that allows 107 rushing yards per game.
The game could come down to how well those defenses hold against the run as the Red Raiders are forced to deal with Murray and the Sooners will try to handle Shannon Woods.
Oklahoma does lead the nation in turnover margin with a +16 while the Red Raiders are +10 on the year.
Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. ET
Should Texas Tech win on Saturday they will take the Big 12 South title and earn a ticket to the Big 12 championship game but if Oklahoma wins it leaves the Big 12 South in a three-way tie with Texas thrown in and the highest ranked BCS team will get the ticket if the conference ends with all three even at the end of the year.
