AP Top 25 College Football Schedule: #7 Penn State Nittany Lions Look to Lock Up Big Ten in Showdown with #17 Michigan State Spartans

The #7 Penn State Nittany Lions (10-1, 6-1) may have seen their dreams of a BCS title end after losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes two weeks ago but they still have an opportunity to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl if they can knock off the #17 Michigan State Spartans (9-2, 6-1) on Saturday.

As dynamic as the Nittany Lions offense has been there is no question it has been their defense that has made the season. They have allowed an average of 11.9 points per game, #4 in the country while they are ranked #10 against the run at just 101.45 per contest.

On the other side of the ball the Nittany Lions have put up an average of 39.4 points per game while balancing their attack, averaging 217 yards on the ground and 224 yards through the air.

None of that bodes well for the Spartans as they haven’t exactly been dominant on the offensive side of the ball. While they have the nation’s #3 rusher in Javon Ringer who averages 140.73 yards per game their running game ranks #65 in the country with 147.82 per contest. That puts a lot of pressure on quarterback Brian Hoyer who has tossed just 9 TDS while being picked off six times.

Of course, if the Spartans manage to pull off the upset it would create a three-way tie atop the Big Ten with the Ohio State Buckeyes sitting at just one loss. In that scenario the Big Ten’s highest ranked BCS team would likely get the invite to Pasadena which would be a good thing for Buckeye fans.

Game time for Saturday is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
