Google Marketing Exec Wael Ghonim Released in Egypt

In a Tweet posted Monday afternoon, Google announced Wael Ghonim was released in Egypt. Ghonim, Google’s head of marketing in the Middle East, went missing January 28 after taking part in political protests in Cairo. Ghonim had been taken into custody by Egyptian authorities.

"Huge relief -- Wael Ghonim has been released. Our love to him and his family," Google tweeted around 1 p.m. ET.

Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq was the first to confirm Ghonim was in custody. Egyptian state TV reported Sunday night that Shafiq said Ghonim would be released on Monday.

After his release, Ghonim Tweeted, "Freedom is a bless (sic) that deserves fighting for it.”
