South African Judge Sentences Teen to Four Life Terms for Racist Killing Spree

A judge in South Africa has sentenced a 19-year-old white man to four life terms for a racist killing spree in which he shot to death four black people including a 3-month-old baby and a 10-year-old boy.

Johan Nel, who was 18 at the time of the murders, was also sentenced to more than 75 years on counts of attempted murder, possessing a firearm and possession of ammunition.

Judge Ronald Hendricks and the prosecuting lawyer had received several death threats through the course of the trial, warning they would be killed if Nel was handed a life sentence.

Nel went on his killing spree last January in a farming community on the North West province. Witnesses said Nel had been shouting racist remarks while firing his gun.
