Iraqis Protest Over Proposed Deal Allowing U.S. Troops to Remain in Country Following UN Mandate Expiration

Thousands of Iraqis took to the streets of Baghdad in protest of a proposed deal that would allow U.S. troops to remain in Iraq following the expiration of a UN directive set for the end of December.

While the Iraqi cabinet has agreed to the Status of Forces Agreement the measure still needs to gain the approval of parliament. If parliament fails to ratify the agreement or renew the UN mandate the U.S. would have to suspend their operations.

Parliament is expected to vote on the measure next week.

Friday’s protest was called by Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr, an outspoken critic of any deal involving the United States. While he did not attend the demonstration a statement he wrote was read that declared, “The government must know that it is the people who help it in the good and the bad times. If it throws the occupier out, all the Iraqi people will stand by it.”

According to the Status of Forces Agreement the U.S. would remove all 150,000 troops by the end of 2011.
