Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit are overseeing a massive rescue operation to save villagers caught up in fighting on Thailand and Cambodian border.
The royal couple voiced their concerns for thousands of people yesterday (07.02.11) as the Rajaprajanugroh Foundation was ordered to distribute 3,000 blankets and 1,000 kitchen utensils among 3,000 villagers taking shelter at an emergency centre in Si Sa Ket province's Kantharalak district.
A 4.6-square-kilometre border area contested between Thailand and Cambodia has been evacuated by Thai people after fighting broke out between troops on Friday.
Over 15,000 villagers have now sought help from 38 emergency assistance centres across the province.
A bank account has also been opened by the Interior Ministry for anyone who wants to make donations to help the affected villages.
Clashes over the weekend resulted in the death of a Thai villager and one Thai soldier as well as 34 injuries to both civilians and troops.
Although fighting resumed yesterday for 20 minutes, no deaths or injuries were reported and officials say that Thai soldiers along the border will control the situation and provide safety for its residents.
Colonel Chinnakat Rattanajittit, a spokesman for the 2nd Army Region, told the Bangkok Post: "Villagers should remain at the refugee centres while the situation remains uncertain."
