The Golden State Warriors have traded Al Harrington to the New York Knicks for Jamal Crawford on Friday afternoon.
Neither team has yet commented on the deal, according to ESPN.
Harrington publicly demanded a trade just before the start of the season after privately urging Golden State to move him for months. The Knicks were interested in a versatile forward like Harrington for head coach Mike D'Antoni's high-powered offense.
Harrington will be reunited with Knicks president Donnie Walsh, who drafted Harrington in 1998 with the Pacers and brought him back to the team in a trade with Atlanta in 2006.
In order to get Harrington, the Knicks had to part with Crawford, their leading scorer who was likely to flourish in D'Antoni's offense. Crawford will now move into the starting lineup for the Warriors, who need backcourt help after the ankle surgery of Monta Ellis.
Crawford is averaging 19.6 points per game this season after averaging a career-best 20.6 points per game and 5.0 assists last season.
Harrington's contract was also a big plus for the Knicks. Harrington will receive $9.2 million this season, $10 million next season and expires after the 2009-10 campaign. This falls in line with the Knicks' goal of pursuing LeBron James, who becomes a free agent in 2010.
If Crawford declines a player option to become a free agent in July 2009, his deal would run through the 2010-11 season, paying $8.6 million this season, $9.4 million in 2009-10 and $10 million in 2010-11.
