An Italian owned oil tanker was attacked and hijacked by pirates Tuesday. The European Union Naval Force in Somalia said the MV Savina Caylyn was en route to Malaysia from Sudan when it was attacked in the Indian Ocean about 670 nautical miles east of Socotra Island.
According to the Italian Navy, the captain of the Savina Caylyn attempted to fend off the five assailants by firing water jets on their skiff. The pirates used small arms and grenades on the tanker before seizing it.
None of the Savina Caylyn’s 22 crew members were injured in the attack. Authorities have been unable to communicate with the tanker.
