Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton Said to Accept Secretary of State Position

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) has accepted President-elect Barack Obama's offer of the position of Secretary of State on Friday, according to several media outlets.

Clinton has given up her Senate seat and will become the face of the United States internationally for the administration led by her Democratic Party rival.

Clinton came to her decision after additional discussion with Obama about the nature of her role and his plans for foreign policy, according to the New York Times.

Two Clinton confidants confirmed Clinton's decision on Friday. However, senior Obama advisers said Friday morning that the offer had not been formally accepted and no announcement would be made until after Thanksgiving.

Clinton and Obama ran the closest Democratic Party nomination battles in recent history, but soon after Obama received the nomination, he reached out to Clinton and her husband President Bill Clinton.

This is the first time a woman has succeeded another woman for the position of Secretary of State. Clinton, who will succeed Condoleezza Rice, will become the third female Secretary of State in U.S. history. Rice was the first African-American woman to hold the position.
