A new play about the complicated love life of Britain's Prince Charles will open in Brussels today (09.02.11).
'The Prince's Choice' will mix the real life romantic entanglements of the prince - who married and divorced Princess Diana before marrying Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall in 2005 - with invented scenes and will feature five characters including the prince, his current spouse and former wife, his mother Queen Elizabeth and James, a fictional butler.
Director Fabrice Gardin told The Guardian: "It's a fascinating world of secrets, things life unsaid and taboos.
"It is also a critique of the way high society conducts human relations, considering itself above the law."
The play has been written by cultural commentator Pascal Vrebos who compared Charles to William Shakespeare's tragic heroes Hamlet and Othello.
He said: "Camilla wants to be a royal mistress, Diana is in love with the idea of royalty and Charles doesn't want to marry. It's a comedy of masks, of power and money, of intrigues, of secret services and sex."
Charles is currently visiting the EU parliament in Brussels, to urge officials to stay focused on climate change despite the economic downturn.
