Traditional gateway drugs being skipped

Harder drugs chosen over 'softer drugs'

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) recently began tracking statistics on a variety of different facets of drug abuse including the use of gateway drugs.

Gary Boggs, executive assistant with the Office of Diversion Control in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, presented an alarming statistic: individuals are no longer utilizing gateway drugs; instead they are jumping right into controlled substances via prescription abuse.

“Mr. Boggs revealed DEA statistics which show that 2,500 people daily begin using prescription drugs to get high for the first time,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Previously, individuals first experimented with marijuana or synthetics and then eased into harder drugs. Unfortunately, it now seems that many are skipping the ‘softer drugs’ altogether. There have been strides made against the abuse of prescription drugs with laws such as the Ryan Haight Act, which bans the sale of controlled substances via the internet without having visited a physician, in-person, to obtain a written prescription. This has certainly helped, but obviously we have a long way to go.”

It is estimated that one-third of all new prescription drug abusers are between the ages of 12 and17, which further emphasizes the need for drug prevention programs.
