Effects of drug abuse leads to social alienation

Expressions, emotions, hard for substance abusers to decipher

A study done in Spain shows that individuals who have abused drugs often times have difficulty in identifying subtle social cues such as some facial expressions, among others. The study further shows that a relationship exists between drug abuse and the inability to identify and correctly interpret basic emotions like anger, disgust, fear and sadness.

“We’ve always know that drug abuse impairs individuals on so many levels,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “This discovery raises many challenges. Obviously, non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions, are crucial to basic communication. Without the ability to interpret and internalize these cues properly, substance abusers face even more difficulty in social situations than do those who do not abuse substances. And, this is an important point: the more isolated from society that addicted individuals become, the greater the chance for them to continue their pattern of abusing alcohol and drugs and to never seek help.”

Scientists at The University of Granada are the first to have investigated this particular phenomenon of psychological deterioration among substance abusers.
