Greek Ship and Crew Released by Somali Pirates

A Greek oil tanker hijacked by Somali pirates in September has been released along with the 19 crew members who had been hostage.

The MV Genius was passing through the Gulf of Arden on its way to the United Arab Emirates when it was seized by Somali Pirates on Sept. 26, the same day another large vessel, the MV Favina, carrying 33 tanks and weapons was hijacked.

Waters off the coast of Somalia have grown increasingly dangerous for vessels as pirates have continued to target the ships as a means of collecting ransom. Because Somalia lacks a stable government there is little that can be done to stop the acts of piracy.

Several countries have begun to discuss methods that could be implemented to protect ships passing through the busy waterway.
