Zimbabwe Government Refuses Visa Request from Kofi Annan, Jimmy Carter

A planned trip to Zimbabwe by former UN head Kofi Annan and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter has been canceled after the government refused to provide the dignitaries a visa.

Annan and Carter were to meet with Graca Machel, the wife of Nelson Mandela, in an effort to help Zimbabweans in need. All three figures are part of an organization called the Elders which is designed to find solutions to world problems.

Officials in Zimbabwe had said they would not try to block the request for visas yet Annan told reporters at a press conference in Johannesburg “We had to cancel our visit because the government made it very clear that it will not cooperate.”

Zimbabwe has suffered a recent cholera outbreak that has killed at least 300 people and serious food shortages and sanitation problems along with a decline in health services have left the country in peril.

The suffering in Zimbabwe has largely been attributed to the instability of the government as the power-sharing deal between President Robert Mugabe and MDC opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai continues to create uncertainty.
