The Vatican’s daily newspaper, Osservatore Romano, has seemingly forgiven legendary Beatles member John Lennon for a quip he made during an interview in 1966 in which he declared “we’re more popular than Jesus.”
More than 40 years after the statement that incensed Christians across the globe the Vatican has put the remark aside and attributed it to a “boast” made by a 26-year-old struggling to come to grips with his soaring popularity.
In the article published by the Osservatore Romano it was printed, “The remark by John Lennon, which triggered deep indignation mainly in the United States, after many years sounds only like a 'boast' by a young working-class Englishman faced with unexpected success, after growing up in the legend of Elvis and rock and roll.”
Lennon made the remark to a reporter for the London Evening Standard and after the statement was reprinted in an American publication several months later there was a huge backlash. Many radio stations refused to play the Beatles and concerts were cancelled at which time Lennon addressed the issue saying, “I was not saying whatever they're saying I was saying. I'm sorry I said it really. I never meant it to be a lousy anti-religious thing. I apologize if that will make you happy. I still do not know quite what I've done. I've tried to tell you what I did do, but if you want me to apologize, if that will make you happy, then OK, I'm sorry.”
The Beatles split in 1969 and 11 years later on Dec. 8, 1980 Lennon was gunned down outside his New York apartment, the Dakota.
