Marijuana Consumption Increases Risks for Psychosis

by Daun Lee

Supporters for the medical use of marijuana continuously tout the health benefits of its consumption. A study appearing online from the “Archives of General Psychiatry “demonstrates that frequent marijuana users developed serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia an average of 2.7 year before individuals who abstain from smoking the popular narcotic. Experts differ on the reason why they believe this to be true. Some believe that schizophrenic people gravitate to the drug while others feel that marijuana actually causes psychosis. The study also found that children who start using the drug at ages 12 through 15 have a higher rate of developing mental illnesses in their late teens and early twenties.

The news of this recent study may not curtail its use among people. Through surveys 40 percent of the American population has revealed they have either tried marijuana once and many are habitual users. The legalization of medical marijuana in a few has helped the drug shed some the negative viewpoints. For many the benefits of marijuana use outweigh the drugs downfalls which include slowed motor skills and thought processes. Many pot smokers are out in the world and they operate motor vehicles making DUI attorneys in high demand.

While the possibility developing psychosis may not discourage individuals from using pot perhaps the chance of obtaining a conviction for driving under the influence and the cost of DUI lawyers may discourage its use. The advocates of medical marijuana rarely speak of its negativities but a Dui attorney can enlighten many users.
