Phoenix Kiosk Helps the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Shake up Earth Science Education

When it comes to innovation, Phoenix Kiosk isn’t afraid to shake things up a little bit. And one of the company’s most captivating clients, the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), knows all about that phenomenon.  IRIS is a leader in advancing awareness and understanding of seismology and Earth science.

Since 2007, Phoenix Kiosk has provided IRIS with units for their Active Earth Display, a computer-based museum exhibit that brings real-time seismology information to museums, visitor centers, schools and universities. The Active Earth Display runs in an internet browser and consists of a customizable set of web pages about plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis.

IRIS has had great success with its interactive displays, which are in use in more than 50 locations including: Franklin Institute; Birch Aquarium, Scripps Institute; New Mexico Museum of Natural History; Maryland Science Center; Sunset Crater National Monument; Oregon State University’s Oceanographic & Atmospheric Sciences Department; New Mexico Tech’s PASSCAL Instrument Center; National Science Foundation Headquarters; and Amundsen-Scott Station, the South Pole, Antarctica.

The IRIS educational kiosks are visually captivating, are simple to implement and engage audiences with Earth science information without spending resources on a large exhibit. As IRIS develops more region-specific content, the demand for more kiosks is expected to grow.
