Shots were reportedly fired near a motorcade in which Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili and Polish leader Lech Kaczynski were travelling, The two men were on their way to visit an area where Georgian and Russian troops fought earlier this year.
The shots came as the motorcade neared the de facto border with South Ossetia, the breakaway region that was at the center of the Georgia-Russian conflict in August.
Those in the motorcade blamed uniformed South Ossetian guards for the gunshots but South Ossetia and Russia, which maintains a military presence in South Ossetia, have denied responsibility.
Saakashvili has continued to blame Russia for breaking a ceasefire agreement signed by Tbilisi and Moscow.
A Russian spokesman dismissed Saakashvili’s claims telling Interfax news agency, “The claims that Russian servicemen were implicated in the shelling of the cortege do not correspond with reality. A shelling of the cortege by our servicemen is completely out of the question.”
